The Tournament Players Club—i.e. TPC—network of golf courses is known for consistently high levels of service and golf course quality. The Tournament Players Club at Myrtle Beach is no exception. Designed by Tom Fazio, it is the only course on the Grand Strand to be awarded the maximum five stars on Golf Digest’s “Places To Play” ranking. It carries a professional golf pedigree as well, having hosted the Senior Tour Championship in the past as well.
TPC Myrtle Beach sports smooth, expansive Champion Bermuda greens that run fast and with interesting contours. The course bobs and weaves through mostly pine forest and features a pleasing amount of elevation changes, especially for a track located only a few miles from the Atlantic Ocean. Each nine begins with par fours of middling length and builds from there, mixing in some stout par threes and fours with beguiling risk-reward holes like the 522-yard par five 6th and the 333-yard par four 12th.
Perhaps the best of these risk-reward chances comes at the finale, a 538-yard beauty that plays as a three-shotter for most but is reachable in two for the daring and accurate player. The first order of business is to thread a long, straight tee ball between a stand of trees on the left and a meandering creek on the right. This creek crosses the fairway some 330 yards off the back tee and feeds into a lake that runs down the remainder of the left side of the hole and protects the front, left and rear of the putting surface. The player who bails out too far to the right is likely to catch any of a number of bunkers, but a mighty second shot that matches the first can yield an eagle opportunity to close the round.
Off the course, visitors will enjoy TP Myrtle Beach’s private club-caliber facilities. The clubhouse overlooks the 18th green and houses women’s and men’s locker rooms, a comfortable pro shop with amiable staff, a snack bar and a grille-style restaurant. The excellent practice area outside includes an expansive putting green, chipping green and a grass driving range where touring professionals can sometimes be seen honing their games. A staff of golf professionals can arrange and give lessons and club fittings as well.
